Smoking in public lands Shah Rukh Khan in trouble:

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has been issued a legal notice by an NGO for smoking in public during two recent events - the Twenty20 cricket match in Mumbai and Hindustan Times Summit in Delhi.

The NGO, National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE) issued legal notice to SRK for smoking in public during two recent events.

NOTE, an anti-tobacco NGO, which is already into a legal battle with mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan over his movie posters showing him smoking cigar, issued legal notice through its lawyer Friday.

The NGO has threatened to sue the King Khan for promoting smoking in public places, which is banned under the Anti-Tobacco Act.

The notice to SRK has been issued under Sections 4 and 5 (3) of cigarette and other tobacco products (prohibition of advertisements and regulation of trade and commerce, production, supply and distribution) Act, 2003.

"Images of Shah Rukh Khan inhaling smoke were shown on Doordarshan during its telecast of the Twenty20 cricket match in Mumbai on October 20. The national television channel's telecast of such outrageous images is another act worth condemnation," NOTE general secretary Dr Shekhar Salkar said.

Prior to this incident, SRK was shown sitting on the dais with a lighted cigarette in his hand during the Hindustan Times Summit in Delhi on October 12 and 13, NOTE said.

These acts show the much-acclaimed actor and youth icon in a very poor light, the NGO mentioned.

A superstar, imitated and adored by millions cannot lend a helping hand to promote smoking, Salkar added.

NOTE has termed SRK's act as illegal, indecent and unethical.

Incidentally, notice to SRK came on the day of the release of Anurag Kashyap 's No Smoking , starring John Abraham . The film depicts the hazardous effects of tobacco consumption.

"The sufferings of not only the addict, but those of his kins are passionately portrayed in the film and the director should be applauded for making a film with time relevant social message," Salkar, a cancer surgeon by profession, said.

He said the message of the film acquires credence in face of the fact that annually 10,00,000 Indians succumb to various respiratory and cardiac diseases, the most dreaded being cancer, in many cases due to tobacco consumption.

"Tobacco-related cancer itself contributes to 40 per cent of cases in India. Most of the patients undergo an agonising phase resulting into untimely deaths and sufferings in the age group of 30 to 50 years, which is the prime time for any individual," NOTE added.

Shah Rukh Khan – The 'Maha Style Icon'

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has received the Maha Style Icon award at the star studded MTV Lycra Style Awards 2007 in Mumbai.

The King Khan, attired in black trousers, shirt and light brown coat, received the award at the Andheri Sports Complex Thursday night.

"I am honoured to receive the award," said SRK, waving to enthusiastic crowds.

The glittering evening hosted by MTV VJs Sagarika, Cyrus Broacha and Cyrus Sahukar saw the Most Stylish Film Award going to Dhoom 2 .

Lindsay Lohan's family has signed up to star in their own reality TV show.

The Osbournes-style program will mainly feature Dina Lohan and her singer/actress daughter Ali, but Lindsay will be making a few cameo appearances.

Filming for the series, which will be shown on E!, is set to begin on Oct. 30 in New York. Dina Lohan will be at the center of the action as well as serving as executive producer. The show will also follow the Lohan matriarch as she attempts to manage other performers' careers.

She tells People magazine, "It's about what I do, how you can be successful, and be a single mom and fulfilling your kids' dreams.

"It won't just be following my family around like other shows. It'll show me cultivating careers, going to soccer practice; Ali going to school and in the studio. It'll encompass everything. The models-turned-animal activists are coordinating some rescue efforts, calling for volunteers and the fostering of injured or lost animals. They are even working on a fundraiser tentatively scheduled for December 22. Shane tells TMZ, "People love animals like their family."

Britney Spears has left the courtroom, escorted by her attorneys and several Sheriff's deputies. She looked extremely upset. Kevin also walked out with his attorney, but looked very happy.

Testimony was given by both parties, the judge took the case under submission, but issued no ruling.

K-Fed's attorney spoke to reporters after the hearing, and told the group that the court will issue a written ruling sometime Monday or Tuesday.

Talkshow queen Oprah Winfrey was brought down to earth by a bird, when her private jet was forced to return to the Santa Barbara, California airport on Monday, after it collided with it, cracking the aircraft's windshield.

After spending Christmas at her 42-acre seaside mansion in nearby Montecito, the TV titan and her longtime beau Stedman Graham boarded her Gulfstream jet to fly to the East Coast, but were forced to make an emergency landing.

Celina Jaitley who has been made the Brand Ambassador of Egypt by the Egyptian Board, says that Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan is the favourite actor of the local people.

In a release in Mumbai on Thursday, Celina also said the Egyptians are also big fans of Bollywood films.

According to the release, Celina made a trip down to Cairo to see the dynamic metropolis, which is also the largest city in the Middle East. This also happens to be her first trip to Egypt.

Celina's first trip was to the Giza Pyramids. She was completely awestruck by the tallest structure in the world standing for over 3,800 years.

The original entrance of the Pyramid leads into the descending passage, which slopes down at an angle of about 26 degrees. It is a narrow passage, which measures about 3-1/2 feet wide by almost 4 feet high. It can be tiring and dangerous but Celina checked in while many of her friends backed out, the release added.

Hillary Clinton Turned 60-Years

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton turned 60-years-old on Thursday and celebrated with one heck of a bash on Thursday night.

Elvis Costello and Billy Crystal were among those in attendance at the birthday bash for the now 60-year-old Hillary Clinton. She turned 60 and also raised $1.5 million for her campaign.

The party took place on Thursday night at Manhattan’s Beacon Theater with 3,000 paying guests.

Costello stated “Happy Birthday, Mrs. President!”

Clinton took the stage and threw a blow at Republican Rudy Giuliani and his claim to be cheering for the Red Sox in the World Series stating “I have been a fan — and I remain a fan — of the Yankees, no changes, no looking to curry favor with anybody else.”

Many believe that this new birthday for Clinton will allow her to reach out to a whole new group of older women who may have not supported her before.

Bill Clinton, standing next to his daughter Chelsea, introduced Hillary Clinton, his wife. He talked about how they met at Yale Law School 37 years ago. He stated “She was just 23 when we met - the poor child didn’t know any better.”

Hillary’s 88-year-old mother was also in the front row.

Sanjay Dutt Challenging His Conviction

Sanjay Dutt:

Actor Sanjay Dutt on Thursday moved the Supreme Court, challenging his conviction and six-year imprisonment awarded by the TADA court in the “1993 Mumbai bomb blast case.” He also filed an interim application seeking a direction to release him on bail.

Prosecution’s case:

Mr. Dutt said the prosecution case was that he was in possession of an illegal weapon from January 16, 1993 to April 12, 1993 (in the notified area under the TADA Act).

Further, it stated that he was in possession of a 9 mm pistol from September 1992. He said no arms or ammunition were recovered from him or his residence or at his instance.

He said there was no credible evidence against him and the prosecution failed to discharge the burden cast upon it.

The procedure adopted by the trial court was in utter violation of the Criminal Procedure Code and Article 21 of the Constitution (right to life and liberty), he said.

His conviction was entirely based on inadmissible evidence, and as such, the judgment rendered by the trial court was erroneous in law and consequently unsustainable.

The actor said the TADA court judge had acquitted him of any involvement in the conspiracy in the case and convicted him for an offence under the Arms Act. Hence the rigorous conditions for grant of bail would not apply to him.

Mr. Dutt said that during the pendency of the trial he was on bail for over 12 years. During this period, he abided by all the conditions stipulated in the bail order.

Foreign travel:

He had travelled abroad on more than 50 occasions and on every occasion returned and surrendered to the jurisdiction of the trial court, Mr. Dutt said.

He prayed for quashing the impugned judgment and to release him on bail until the disposal of the criminal appeal.

'Suit's Akshay Kumar Fine'

Akshay Kumar makes a suit look good. Designer Narendra Kumar who styled Akshay Kumar for the advertisements of a suiting brand just can’t stop raving. “Most people are not comfortable in a suit…Akshay is,” he says adding, “The good thing about this campaign is that we have transformed the business suit into something fashionable.”

In the campaign, you’ll see Akshay wearing sharp-cut dressed down suits, but mind you, it’s not so much Italian Mafioso. “The look for Akshay is more English…It’s more of a slim-cut H Silhouette cut really close to the body, rather than an Italian V Silhouette,” Kumar explains.

And true to what he says, you’ll find Kumar wearing everything from white linen suits to sharp cut double breast suits worn with everything from canvas sneakers to chappals. “The great thing about Akshay is that he is associated with a younger image…someone that the younger professional and ‘out of college’ types look up to,” Kumar says adding that what also makes Akshay connect with the younger lot is his constant dabble into hip-hop on screen, something that once again makes him approachable to the boy on the street.

Robert Goulet In Critical Condition With Lung Disorder

Veteran singer/actor Robert Goulet has been hospitalized with lung disease Interstitial Pulmonary Fibrosis.

The 73-year-old was taken to a Las Vegas hospital on Sept. 30, after feeling increasingly weak and suffering from shortage of breath.

After being diagnosed with the rare and potentially fatal disorder, he was transferred to Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Oct. 13 to undergo an emergency lung transplant, where doctors are awaiting a donated lung. He is said to be in a critical condition.

Goulet's third wife, Vera, says, "Our friends have been incredibly supportive through these crucial times. My Robert has given tremendous joy to the world for six decades and he is loved by many people who are praying for him.

"He is a strong, positive man, full of life. I know if he is given the transplant he will pull through this.

"There are still many unsung songs for him to sing and, in my heart, I know it is not his time to go."

Goulet began his career as a DJ in Canada, but became a Broadway sensation in the early 1960s after landing the role as Lancelot in hit musical Camelot, opposite Richard Burton and Julie Andrews. He went on to claim a Tony Award in 1968 for his role in Happy Time.

Goulet also became a regular on TV shows, with cameos in The Jackie Gleason Show, Cannon, Police Woman and Fantasy Island, and he enjoyed great success as a crooner. He also provided the voice for Wheezy the Penguin in Toy Story 2.

Srija,Sirish Bharadwaj in Delhi : High court provides protection

In the latest turn of events in the drama on Megastar Chiranjeevi's family front, his recently -wed daughter Srija moved the Delhi High Court seeking protection against her influential family and Delhi High court today (October 22) directed the police to provide protection to her.

Chiranjeevi's 19-yr-old daughter Srija married her boyfriend Sirish Bhardwaj on October 17th against the wishes of her family, in an Arya Samaj ceremony. Immediately after the ceremony, the couple approached the media, saying they feared for their lives, and asked for police protection.

Advocate Pinky Anand said that the court had ordered a police protection for Srija and her husband in the interest of their life and liberty.and ordered Chiranjeevi family to submit a written assurance that there is no threat to the newly-wed couple from them.

The next hearing on this case is scheduled on October 29:

Sanjay Dutt Returned To Prison

Actor Sanjay Dutt [Images] on Monday surrendered before the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act Court in Mumbai and was taken into custody after being given a copy of his judgment in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case.

Dutt will be kept in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail temporarily and will be taken to Pune's Yerwada jail on Monday evening.

On Saturday, the actor got a minor reprieve as he did not receive his judgment copy, because it was not ready then.

However, the court had handed over the 4,340-page judgment to 13 convicts that day, including 10 who have been awarded the death sentence.

Dutt, who was sentenced to six-year rigorous imprisonment on July 31, had spent a few weeks in Pune's Yeravada jail before being granted interim bail by the Supreme Court.

The apex court, while granting him bail, had instructed him to surrender once he received a copy of the judgment.

Kid Rock has been arrested in Atlanta in connection with a fight at a waffle house, the city’s Fox 5 News is reporting.

Rock (real name: Bob Ritchie), 36, who played a sold-out show Saturday night in Atlanta, and five members of his entourage were taken into custody facing a misdemeanor charge of simple battery.

Police say Kid Rock stopped by a restaurant early Sunday after their show, and a male customer recognized a female in Rock’s entourage. Words were exchanged, and a fight ensued, the station reports.

After police were called, the singer’s tour bus was pulled over, and he and the members of his entourage were arrested. In addition to Rock’s arrest, the male customer also has been charged with a felony for allegedly smashing a window of the restaurant.

According to FOX, Kid Rock posted bail and was released Sunday evening from DeKalb County jail, signing autographs on his way out.

Troubled pop star Britney Spears cannot visit her two young children until she complies with a court order, a US court commissioner ruled today.

“Petitioner’s (Spears’) visitation with the minor children is suspended pending the petitioner’s compliance with the court orders,'’ Superior Court Commissioner Scott Gordon wrote in an order dated yesterday.

The ruling in Los Angeles followed an emergency hearing, the latest in a custody battle between Spears and ex-husband Kevin Federline.

The singer is battling Federline for custody of their sons, two-year-old Sean Preston and one-year-old Jayden James.

Such is the case with WWK's resident cult TV expert Jennifer Godwin, who devoured the two-hour movie (I'm guessing more than once), and has this to report back...

Thank gods! Battlestar is back!

Battlestar Galactica: Razor, a two-hour TV movie premiering Nov. 24 on Sci Fi, is meant to tide us over until Battlestar Galactica the series returns in February 2008, and it absolutely delivers the BSG glories we've come to expect, with a little streak of Alien and Terminator 2 thrown in for good measure.

Preview copies were distributed to the press last week, and while we're not at liberty to disclose the entire story, I did feel it was my duty as a fellow fan to check it out and share what I could.

So, for your previewing pleasure, I've distilled Razor down to a list of the top 10 things you need to know. Enjoy!

1. Setting: Razor switches back and forth in time between Lee Adama's leadership of the Battlestar Pegasus and Admiral Helena Cain's (Michelle Forbes) leadership of the Pegasus immediately following the original Cylon attack.
2. Winks at the Audience: Gina's (Pegasus Six) last name is Inviere. Inviere is Old Gemenese for resurrection. Oh, those wacky Cylons and their name games.

The Rs. 5,000-crore Hindi film industry had not done badly in 2007. Along with major box-office hits such as Partner and Chak De India, there were quite a few middle level hits such as Dhamaal, and Heyy Baby. But the icing on the cake for the industry could be the two eagerly awaited releases, Om Shanti Om and Saawariya. Both films have exciting newcomers, Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor.

While Deepika is a successful model, Sonam, daughter of actor Anil Kapoor, is a true product of Bollywood culture. Sonam stands tall at 5 feet 9.5 inches. Dad Anil Kapoor made his debut when he was 12, but the movie, Tu Payal mein Geet, had to be shelved. No such fears for the daughter. Of course, she was nervous during her first shot but when the camera began rolling, the nervousness disappeared. Thankfully, it was an easy shot. She had to walk down a bridge at Karjat with full make up on. Bhansali was a tough taskmaster, there was occasional tension on the sets, but Sonam carried on bravely. After all, it is not every movie aspirant who gets to work under a director like Bhansali!

Of course, Bhansali was no stranger to Sonam who was one of the assistant directors of his film Black. She compares him to a favourite school teacher, fair but strict and expecting the best from the student! She had excellent rapport with Saawariya hero, Ranbir Kapoor, another debutant. They had been childhood friends, growing up and dancing together all the time, passing compliments back and forth.

New challenge

Deepika found the transition from modelling to acting not easy but she loved every minute of the new challenge. She attended acting classes for three months, and since the film is based on the 1970s, watched on the video dozens of films from that era. “The costumes, dialogue delivery, the movements were all so different and needed careful studying,” she recalled. In director Farah Khan and co-star Shah Rukh Khan, she found understanding and helpful seniors, always ready to advise and help. “They had seen it all, they know so much about every aspect of film making,” Deepika exclaimed. Farah and Shah Rukh promoted her in the media and everywhere and this was satisfying. With Om Shanti Om and Saawariya set to release almost at the same time, Deepika knows there would be comparisons with Sonam. But she is not bothered. The two movies are totally different, and meant for different types of audiences, she pointed out. She would be happy if both films clicked in a big way. 1983 Verdict May Help Sanjay Dutt Get Bail

As the Supreme Court Monday hears Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt's bail plea, a verdict of the same court earlier granting temporary bail to a convict in the absence of the trial court's detailed order may come handy for him.

The ruling on which Dutt's lawyers base their hopes was given by a five-judge constitution bench of the apex court in December 1983.

The case relates to the preventive detention of Akali leader Jagdev Singh Talwandi, sent to jail by the Punjab government on apprehension of breach of peace owing to his consistent opposition to late Khalistani leader Jarnail Singh Bhidrawale.

The government, however, had not supported its act of jailing Talwandi with a reasoned judgment.

Talwandi had approached the apex court to challenge his preventive detention, saying the government's failure to supply him a detailed, reasoned order for putting him in jail was violation of the mandatory provisions under Section 363 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

This section entitles a jailed convict to a detailed reasoned judgment, elaborating the grounds of his conviction and imprisonment.

The five-judge constitution bench had readily granted bail to Talwandi, saying that violation of the mandatory provision of Section 363 amounted to violating the fundamental right to life and liberty enshrined in Article 21 of the constitution.

In his petition, Dutt too has made the Mumbai anti-terror court's failure to supply him the detailed ruling elaborating the reasons of his conviction a major ground for bail.

Dutt has contended that this was in violation of Section 363 of CrPC, which entitles him to a copy of the detailed judgment at the time of conviction.

He said that this novel procedure of the court of imposing sentences on the convicts without handing them the reasoned judgment has impinged upon their fundamental right to life and liberty.

Convicted Nov 11, 2006, on charges of possessing illegal fire arms in the run-up to the Mumbai serial bombings of March 1993, Dutt was sentenced to a six-year jail term July 31, 2007.

Presently serving his term in Pune's Yerwada jail, the popular actor had been taken in custody soon after the pronouncement of the sentence without having been given a detailed, reasoned verdict, spelling out the grounds of his conviction as the same was not ready at the time of his sentencing.

He then moved the apex court seeking bail and challenging his conviction under the Arms Act.

Earlier while seeking an early bail for Dutt on Aug 10, senior counsel Fail S. Nariman had referred to the apex court 1983 ruling in the Talwandi case.

In response, the bench headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan had assured him that it would examine the impact of its constitution bench's judgment on Dutt's case as well.

Karan Singh, a member of Dutt's legal team, told IANS that he hoped the apex court would readily grant interim bail to the actor following the trial court's failure to supply him its detailed judgement at the time of jailing him.

Dutt, among Bollywood's most popular actors especially after the success of 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' last year, has a number of film projects on hand to complete.

Dev Anand Conferred 'Punjab Ratan' Award

Legendary Bollywood actor-producer Dev Anand was conferred the title 'Punjab Ratan' (Jewel of Punjab) by the World Punjabi Organisation (European Division) for his outstanding contribution in the field of art and entertainment.

Describing him as "one of the greatest stars" of Bollywood, Lord Navnit Dholakia, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords presented the award to the octogenarian actor at a glittering ceremony at the Landmark Hotel here on Thursday night.

Holding the trophy close to his chest, Dev Anand who was born in Gurdaspur in Punjab, said: "It will be there closest to my heart."

NRI industrialist Lord Swraj Paul, MP and former minister Keith Vaz, NRI MP Sailesh Vara and Kartar Lalvani, Chief of Vitabiotics were among the other distinguished guests present on the occasion.

Dev Anand who was here to launch his autobiography 'Romancing With Life", said: "the whole country is proud of you Punjabis. Keep it up."

Dev Anand has won the best actor Filmfare award for Kala Pani in 1958 and Guide in 1966 and won the Filmfare Lifetime achievement award in 1991.

In 2000, he was awarded the Film Goers' "Mega Movie Maestro of the Millennium Award" in Mumbai. The President of India honoured him with the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award, India's third highest civilian award, in 2001.

He won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest award for cinematic excellence in 2002. The next year, he received the special "Lifetime Achievement Award" for "Outstanding Achievement in Indian Cinema" at IIFA Award in Johannesburg.

Britney Spears may as well amend the title of her latest single to "Gimme More Bad Luck."

In her latest in a series of driving-related woes, the embattled pop princess appeared to run over the foot of a paparazzo Thursday while exiting a Beverly Hills medical building.

Video footage of the incident shows photographers swarming Spears' white Mercedes convertible as she tries to pull out of the garage.

She honks and lurches forward, and suddenly there are shouts, as the paparazzi are seen leaning over one of their own, whose foot apparently had an unfortunate up-close-and-personal encounter with Spears' tire.

According to a paparazzo who filmed the incident, Spears put her hand up to her mouth in shock and burst into tears, but drove away without stopping to check if the man was all right.

"She knew after he fell and he didn't back up, and he was just stuck at the front of the car," the lensman told Los Angeles' local ABC affiliate.

"From what I saw with my eyes, she went over it, and he pulled his foot out from the back of the tire."

Video showed a tire mark on one of the unidentified man's white socks, but he left the scene without comment, and Beverly Hills police said no report had been filed.

And there probably won't be.

"Things happen at certain times and she was just a little impatient," the man said in a statement issued by TMZ, which employs the photographer and declined to reveal his name. "She got a little impatient for whatever reason. I say let bygones be bygones."

The incident occurred on the same day Spears reached a civil settlement in her hit-and-run case, stemming from her August fender bender.

The pop star was booked on the misdemeanor hit-and-run count on Tuesday, after she was formally charged in the case last month. However, the settlement—said to be in the $1,000 range—combined with the fact that she has finally acquired a valid California driver's license, could lead to the charges against her being dropped.

All in all, it's been a tough week for Spears.

On Wednesday, a court commissioner revoked her visitation rights with her sons, effective immediately after she apparently failed to comply with a court order.

"Petitioner's visitation with the minor children is suspended pending Petitioner's compliance with the court orders," Court Commissioner Scott Gordon said in his ruling.

According to sources close to Spears, she's devastated by the latest development in her custody battle.

"She's really upset," a source tells E! Online. "She keeps saying, 'I can't believe this is happening.' It's like she just can't accept what's happened."

However, things could be looking up for Spears, at least according to Kevin Federline's lawyer.

Attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan said he's confident the singer will regain visitation rights with one-year-old Jayden James and two-year-old Sean Preston ahead of the next hearing in the case, which is scheduled for Oct. 26.

"She is getting in compliance," the lawyer Kaplan confirmed to E! Online, adding that "visitation will be reinstated" in the near future, likely before next week's court date.

Rugby Mascot Harry Puts Sport Before Romance

Prince Harry missed girlfriend Chelsy Davy's 22nd birthday last weekend to be in Paris for England’s victory over France in the Rugby World Cup. And it looks like his passion for the sport will be keeping her from him again this weekend.

The 23-year-old, who the rugby team refer to as their lucky mascot, is set to cheer on England in the highly anticipated final against his South African girlfriend's national team on Saturday.

It's not known whether Chelsy will be joining her royal beau for the match in the Stade de France, although according to The Sun Harry has apparently given his other ticket away to his brother Prince William. The pretty Zimbabwean, who was formerly based in Cape Town, may well choose to support the South African side at her university digs in Leeds instead.

Chelsy has attended several sporting events with Harry in the past, including a cricket match in Antigua in April, although whether or not she's a rugby fan is unclear. Fellow royal girlfriend Kate Middleton clearly shares her Prince's enthusiasm for the game, attending the Six Nations with him back in February.

Despite her move to the UK last month to be closer to her beau, Chelsy has not seen as much of Harry as she might have hoped. He famously arrived late to collect her at the airport and has apparently only been up to Leeds to see her once. And for her part she seems to be steering clear of the London social scene of which they were once very much a part.
