Karan Johar, son of the late renowned filmmaker Yash Johar, was born on May 25, 1972. He schooled at Mumbai’s Greenlawns High School before attending H R College. Johar was, by all accounts, always a bit of a film buff. Having lived and studied in South Mumbai all along though, he had few friends connected with the film industry.

After a master’s degree in French, Karan planned to move to Paris, but became involved in cinema instead and later joined Dharma Productions, founded by his father. As his love for cinema kept growing when in college, he became friends with Aditya Chopra, son of filmmaker Yash Chopra.

He narrated a gem of a story idea to Aditya — it went on to become Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge — and the rest is history. While working on Dilwale Dulhaniya… on location in Switzerland, Shah Rukh Khan one day suggested to Karan that he direct his own film. That is how his debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hain, was born. The film ended up one of the biggest blockbusters of all time and won eight Filmfare Awards in 1998. Almost overnight, Karan Johar was a superstar director.

From that point, the hits kept coming. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham went on to win five Filmfare Awards in 2001. In 2003, Karan produced and wrote the script for Kal Ho Naa Ho. In early 2005, he co-produced another movie with Shah Rukh Khan, titled Kaal, which didn’t do as well at the box office. After a four-year break from direction, Karan began working on his third film as a director and fourth as writer — Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

Since then, Lady Luck has been exceedingly sweet to him. He tried his hand at the small screen, and 2004’s chat show Koffee with Karan was a runaway success. Considering this talented filmmaker’s journey is just beginning, we can expect a lot more great stuff from Karan Johar in the years to come.
